We have roughly 18 kilometers of Nordic ski trails that we keep groomed on a daily basis.
I love the exercise, I love the outdoors.
But the biggest part of it is people.
When I can make somebody's day better just makes me feel good.
When people say, "Hi, thanks for doing this."
Man, that just makes my day.
It makes me feel like it's worthwhile.
And that's a big thing.
It's worthwhile.
The thing that keeps this job interesting is because the surface is different every day.
The trees are gonna look different every day.
So even though I'm running around the same trail system, it always looks different.
The other aspect is I get to take something that's a little disheveled and I have the know-how and the tools to fix it.
The snow machine I was on today was an Arctic Cat Bearcat.
They have blades on the front, that are actually called knives, in the industry.
So the knives on the front will turn the snow and there's a back panel that takes that snow as it's rolling.
So it's mixing up and then just sets it underneath a weighted plate that has the corduroy pattern in it.
And what that helps is, especially the people that are skate skiing, when their skis are going from side to side, they can sink an edge in to get that push to propel themselves forward.
When I come out here, I like to leave it as best I can and also it helps make my wife happy.
My wife is an exceptional skier and she says, "You need to get out there and groom my trails."
And you know, I try and do what I'm told.
She's in a race, the Wyoming State Games, the Senior Olympics, if you will.
She'll be doing the 10k.
- It's kind of our thing.
I mean, he seems to really like the grooming.
I, of course, like to ski and I think everyone in our family except the cat, is up here on a day as much as possible.
(bell ringing) - Go for it.
- [Randy] She's extremely passionate about the sport.
And actually, that's how I got into the sport, as well.
Once I met her and we started our life together, I became a lot more knowledgeable about Nordic skiing.
- Here we go.
- Dan and Randy do an amazing job and it's not easy work.
And people think they just ride around on a snow machine and it's just joy riding for a couple hours.
No, it's really hard physical labor and these guys put a lot of effort into this and it's really great what they do.
- When I wake up in the morning, I just think I'm in a position to benefit other people.
I can improve their day, maybe improve their health.
I enjoy my job.
I enjoy the work I get to do.
I get that stupid smile on my face I can't wipe off for a while.
And I look forward to it every day.
